Supporting the Coal Industry

By State Representative Tommy Sankey
74th Legislative District

As Pennsylvanians, we live in the fourth leading coal producing state in the country with mining industry as a major source of employment and tax revenue. Despite these facts, coal has a less than flattering reputation with many people, especially members of the current administration in Washington, D.C. To that end, I am offering legislation I hope will protect those jobs while keeping consumer energy costs low.

My bill would offer a $3 per ton tax credit on coal mined from deposits or waste coal recovered from within the Commonwealth. Known as the Pennsylvania Coal and Air Quality Improvement Tax Credit Act, it would require coal to be delivered to a coal-fired electric generation station that has installed the required pollution control equipment.

Thanks to our abundance of coal, Pennsylvania is one the largest exporters of electric power in the United States. This industry employs 41,500 Pennsylvanians in mine-related jobs across the state, with an average annual salary of $75,000. The resulting contribution to Pennsylvania’s economy is more than $7 billion annually. Those statistics alone cement our status as a leader in energy – one that we should protect.

The coal industry has made great strides in addressing its tarnished reputation. My legislation provides further incentives for the installation of pollution control measures, in an effort to keep family-sustaining jobs and the tax revenue they generate in place.
